Why do so many Americans believe that the moon landing was fake?
Landing on the moon is one of the greatest achievements of man kind. I would expect other countries to accuse the US of faking the landing to discredit us. I would be proud of an achievement like that, but instead, many Americans seem to have no problem spreading all kinds of conspiracy theories. What’s up?
I guess is the media who makes all confusion on the issue..
Because they are thick, and everyone loves a good conspiract theory.
Marshal Mcluhan (Canadian philosopher/academic) coined the phrase “global village” to describe the effect of mass media, particularly television. Canadians live next door to the idiot.
Why hasn’t it been done again? If it really did happen why has no one been on the moon since? Kinda makes you wonder…..
the technology we have today is far more advanced than the technology we had back then and i have heard …i dont know if this is true there is this radiation ring around the moon you get close to it things will get dropped…again i dont know if it was true and theres other reason why they said it didnt happen personally i think it didnt.
The number of disbelievers is pretty small. They are vocal however.
A Gallup poll conducted in 1999 suggests that 89 percent of Americans believe correctly that United States landed astronauts on the moon.
Simple. Generally people are stupid and dense and have no concept of what was actually happening. The Moon landing is quite possibly the greatest American technological achievement of all time.
I think it’s about 10 percent of the population. Little wonder when you’ve got a school system that is so poor, that a sizeable percentage of the population leves high school with no general culture whatsoever, not to mention poor reading / writing / math.
To such completely ignorant, poor, and generally minority people, it is easy to preach that the moon landings were fakes organised by the knowing, rich, and generally majority people, to make them, the little people, feel even worse about themselves.
It’s sad but what can you do about it? Renovate the school system so that it ceases producing such ignorants?
Your “so many” constitutes about 6% of the population, or 18 million people. Dream on, buddy…
They prefer to think that the lunar landing was a conspiracy to make the US look better, they searched visciously (seriously) for any “evidence” they could find that had to do with the fake lunar landing…
National Geographic was amazingly great with a documentary they made. (is it real)
That is a true mystery, but on the other hand, they seem to think light beer is actually beer and Wonder Bread is actually bread.
It’s not that many.A poll revealed that only 6% of people thought that the mon landings were fake.

This is a perfect illustration of the distrust we we have of our own government. Conspiracy theories are as old as time itself but we only have to look at the current administration to see how easily they can decieve a willing public. In general, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to question things like this. We shouldn’t blindly accept knowledge whether it comes from our government, our teachers, or any other “reliable” source.
With that being said there comes a point when the skeptic must accept the truth based on the massive amount of evidence presented. I’ve found that even the cleverest theories on how and why the moon landing was faked can be explained, the people asking the questions just don’t take the time to seek out the answers.
So I guess the reason that so many Americans are skeptical is we tend to distrust the government and we are either too lazy to do the research that proves them correct or it is just more fun to ask a lot of questions and assume a conspiracy.
Essentially, Silverbirch is correct. Everyone loves a good conspiracy.
Americans in general are addicted to sensationalism. What is more interesting, a few facts in a science book about something that happened 40 years ago or the idea that there could be a massive government cover-up that has lasted for almost 40 years?
The way politicians like to dig up dirt on each other, I imagine that if the landings had been faked, one political party would have blamed the other one for deceiving the American people, don’t you think?
As for why we have not been back…We gathered quite a bit if information during the Apollo missions. Enough so that we know that our present technology is not sufficient to enable us to actually live on the moon in such a way as for it to be useful or profitable to mankind.
There are some great natural resources there that we can exploit in the future, but for the present, our technology is still too primitive. It would cost more to get to those resources than they would be worth.
Our technology is growing every day, though. I don’t think it will be too long before we reach the threshold where there is a real incentive to go to the moon. Then we will go back.
