How long does it take for a shuttle to reach the ISS (International Space Station)?

How long does it take to reach the ISS (International Space Station)? I know it takes about three days to get to the moon. That just seems like a long time to be sitting in a cockpit. Once in space do the astronauts remain in the shuttle cockpit ; or can they move around out of their seats on auto-pilot?

It takes about two days or so, because of the trajectory/orbit path needed for the shuttle to get into orbit and meet up and dock with the space station. On the current mission, the shuttle docked with the space station on Day 3.

Yes, the astronauts can get out of their seats once they are in orbit. The flight is preprogrammed, so it is similar to autopilot, and they only need to be at the controls if something needs to be adjusted, or if something goes wrong.

It takes 2 or 3 days to match orbits & rendezvous.
Totally different manouvres than going to the moon.
There is not much cabin room in the shuttle for the crew.
But they are in zero-G for that part of the trip, remember.

The Shuttle gets into orbit in about 8 minutes. Once in orbit the astronauts are free to move about the cabin. The present mission was launched on a Wednesday around noon and the Shuttle finally caught up and docked with the ISS the following Saturday morning.

Despite the great speeds involved in space operations things seems to happen very slowly. Have you ever tried watching any of it on NASA TV? That sucka is like a horse tranquilizer.
