Astronomers with NASA’s Kepler mission have confirmed the existence of an Earth-like planet in a “habitable zone” outside our solar system.

The new planet, Kepler-22b, was discovered by NASA’s Kepler space telescope, which sifts through the universe in search for Earth like planets.

While Kepler has found more than 2,000 possible planets, a potentially habitable planet with an environment quite similar to that of Earth and best positioned to have water and even life has proved elusive – until now.

Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist at NASA Headquarters in Washington, said, “This is major milestone on the road to finding Earth’s twin. Kepler’s results continue to demonstrate the importance of Nasa’s science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe.”

Kepler 22-b was marked as a “candidate” planet shortly after NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft in March 2009. However, Kepler 22b needed three transits around its star to confirm the initial observation.

Kepler 22b:- Kepler-22b shares some key aspects with Earth. Roughly 2.4 times the size of Earth, the new planet is some 600 light years away, which places it squarely in the so-called “Goldilocks zone,” where liquid water could exist on the surface.

Kepler-22b spins around a G-type star, a lot like our very own sun, and follows a 290 day orbit.

The planet is about 15 percent nearer to its star, which is cooler (by about 220 degrees), a bit dimmer and smaller than Earth’s sun.

Preliminary estimates indicate that its surface temperature is about 72 degrees Fahrenheit (22 Celsius), making it relatively pleasant from human perspective.

From the early observations, Kepler astronomers have been unable to ascertain whether the planet is rocky, gaseous or liquid.

“I think there are two things that are really exciting about Kepler-22b. One is that it’s right in the middle of this habitable zone,” Natalie Batalha, Kepler deputy science team lead at San Jose State University in California, said in a press conference.

“The second thing that’s really exciting is it’s orbiting a star very, very similar to our own sun. This is a solar analogue, almost a solar twin, very similar to our own sun and you’ve got a planet 2.4 times the size of the Earth right smack in the habitable zone,” she added.

The Kepler data:- Kepler 22-b was marked as a “candidate” planet shortly after NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft in March 2009. However, Kepler 22-b needed three transits around its star to confirm the initial observation.

In June 2010, the Kepler team announced 312 planet candidates over the first four months of the mission. In February 2011, the number rose to 1,235 potential planets orbiting 997 stars. Since then, the Kepler Space Telescope has found 1,094 more planetary candidates increasing the total number to 2,326.

Of these, 207 are approximately Earth-size, 680 are super Earth-size, 1,181 are Neptune-size, 203 are Jupiter-size and 55 are larger than Jupiter.

Best answer:

Answer by Bones
it really depends on how fast your going…but think about it like this it would take about five times longer to get to jupiter than it would take to get to the sun and the sun is 93 million miles away. i hope this helps!!!!! nasa is sending a probe to jupiter soon and it will be the fastest ship they have ever sent there and its gonna take about a year and a half!!!!

Kruzon: “What prompted you to build this website?”

Xo Property: “I believe we are not alone! You know NASA claims billions of stars exist. It just simply is unfathomable to believe that none of them have planets that can support some form of life. Even intelligent life should exist somewhere out there.”

Kruzon: “What are some of facts leading up to your belief?”

Xo Property: “75000 years ago the earth entered an Ice age. 65000 years ago man wasn’t shaped as we are now. 400 years ago the world was flat and the sun revolved around it. 150 years ago it took 3 months to cross the Atlantic Ocean. 100 years ago, in small town AB Canada, it was a 3 day horse and wagon trip to travel 10 miles to town and back for supplies. 70 years ago man hadn’t put a man in space. 30 years ago wireless communicators was the stuff of science fiction. 1995 the first exo planet was discovered. 5 years ago our solar system had 9 planets now we have 10. We now have space craft out in the cosmos documenting the skies as it has never been documented before. Nasa’s Kepler space telescope mission is to discover earth sized habitable planets and has now discovered 25 earth sized planets. ”

Kruzon: “Is anyone else doing this type of enterprise?”

Xo Property: “For many years now some people have been selling land on the planets in our solar system while still others allow you to name a star and send you some details about the star and these are very expensive options. Now there is an affordable option to the cosmic property claim. A registrar recording property claims and gifts to property claims on exo planets. This site is xoproperty.com For a modest donation (as little as .95) they will record your claim to a specific radian (piece of property) in their registrar for posterity. You may also make donations to gift recipients of radian certificates and send them to whomever you would like to receive a totally unique, one of a kind, user interactive and educational gift. We are the first to suggest you can’t really expect to own a piece of land on a cosmic planet but why not have a little fun with a land claim anyway and perhaps become part of an exo planet community by registering your claim to a piece of an exo planet and sending others that totally unique gift. We also provide a free E Postcard service with over 200 animated E postcards and the ability to upload your own images and maintain a personal calendar, a mailing list and more all from the same website.”

Kruzon: “How do you define exo property land claims?”

Xo Property: We have devised a system by which we wrap exo planets in 100 quadrants and inside each quadrant is 1000 radians (circles). Quadrants near the equator are larger than quadrants near the poles and therefore radians near the equator are larger than radians in quadrants near the poles. Exo planet size is generally measured in number of Jupiters so Quadrants on planets that are 2.4 Jupiters will be larger than quadrants on planets that are ½ Jupiters. There is no claim to any exo planet being habitable now or in the future nor do we make claim as to whether your registered radians will be in an ocean or an active volcano or solid dirt.

Kruzon: “What are your immediate expectations?”

Xo Property: “What we expect is that you will have some fun with our highly user interactive website http://www.xoproperty.com and hope that you will decide to make a donation to register one or more radians for yourself and that you will be gifting others this totally unique, highly interactive and educational exo planet land claim gift. Your donation allows the gift receiver to register for themselves a claim to an exo planet radian and also gives them access to the free animated E Postcard system.”

Kruzon: “Can the radian claimers interact with each other?”

Xo Property: “It is our intention to make the registrar a public document displaying the registered owners names and related radian locations as in a public document and to encourage radian owners to interact towards building planetary communities and with sufficient user support we plan to develop a game of sorts relevant to exo planet exploration and development.”

Kruzon:” Any closing comments.”

Xo property: “We invite you to explore our website and use the free E Postcard system and we hope you will choose to make a donation to register your claim to one or more XO Property radians in your name and send radian land claims as gifts for the gift recipients to register as their claim to a radian on an exo planet.”
